The Pixie is What Made Her

Linda Evangelista has the perfect skin tone and face shape to wear all sorts of hairstyles and colors. In this gallery, I feature some of her most famous and iconic hairstyles over the years.

The pixie haircut she got by hairstylist Julien d’Ys in 1989 is what launched her career. Until then, she was an up-and-coming model but had not yet been discovered. Her long, brown wavy hair hid her gorgeous heart-shaped face and blue eyes, her angular cheekbones and delicate features.

The cut was drastic and freaked Evangelista (and even her hairstylist) out. But the adult pixie was just what she needed to break into the big time. In fact, it “quadrupled my rate,” she told People Magazine.

She was 24 at the time.

“Linda was the first supermodel to cut all her hair off,” says hairstylist Garren to Vogue.

Did she like her cut?

“Sure, I like my short hair,“Evangelista told People. I did get sick of seeing it on everybody, though-every stewardess, every salesclerk and in every restaurant.”

In the years that followed, she dyed her hair platinum blonde, bright red, deep brown. Garren was one of many stylists who helped transform her looks every few months. He told Vogue he helped her go from an “Andy Warhol bob” to a “Louise Brooks page boy.” You’ll see these cuts on the following pages.

While Evangelista is famous for taking risks – and for her quote, “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day” – it seems the hairstylists and colorists she worked with had a lot of influence.

“It used to be that whenever I went to work, Garren or Oribe or Guido would say, ‘Oh, let’s color it! Let’s cut it!’” Evangelista told Harper’s Bazaar in 2013.

And apparently, she didn’t mind the hairstyles that weren’t so fabulous. “Fashion faux pas should be celebrated. I enjoy them because it means we’re not all clones. I’m certain I’ve made quite a few myself, but I like to experiment. Hair is the greatest thing to experiment with because it’s not permanent. If I didn’t like my colour, I’d just change it,” she said in a 2005 interview with The Guardian.

The days of odd hair color and cuts for fashion may be over. In the 2013 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Evangelista mentioned she gets her hair done at Sally Hershberger salon (Sharon Dorram is her colorist) and tries to stay as close to her natural shade as possible. Her hair, too, she says, has grown longer.

“Now everyone just wigs me, so my real hair has gotten really long—I don’t think it’s been this long since 1987,” she said to Harper’s.

Evangelista shared her favorite hair products with Harper’s. They include Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color and Hamadi Shea Hair Cream.
